Win Two Tickets To The Heiress on Broadway

The Heiress starring David Strathairn, Jessica Chastain, Dan Stevens
TICKET GIVEAWAY TO THE HEIRESS: Win two tickets to see “The Heiress” marking the Broadway debuts of Jessica Chastain (Academy Award nominee for The Help) and Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey), alongside theater veterans David Strathairn (Academy Award nominee for Good Night, and Good Luck), and Judith Ivey (two-time Tony Award winner). It is directed by Moises Kaufman (Gross Indecency, The Laramie Project, I Am My Own Wife, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo)
The Heiress, a celebrated play loosely based on the novel “Washington Square” by Henry James, is the story of Catherine Sloper, the shy and sheltered daughter of a prominent New Yorker, caught between the demands of an emotionally distant father and the attentions of a passionate young suitor. It is playing at Walter Kerr Theater (219 W. 48thStreet) through February 10th, 2013. It opens November 1, 2012.

Answer the question: Who had the best Broadway debut you ever saw? Why was he or she the best?
Three requirements to win the tickets: 1. Please put your answer in the comments at the bottom of this blog post, because the winner will be chosen through Random.org based on the order of your reply (not its content. But you must answer the question, giving the person, the Broadway show in which the person debuted, and your reasons for finding his or her performance the best.)
2. Please include in your answer your Twitter name and follow my Twitter feed at @NewYorkTheater so that I can send you a direct message. (If you don’t have a Twitter name, create one. It’s free.)
3. This contest ends Tuesday, October 9th at midnight ET, and I will make the drawing no later than noon the next day. You must respond to my direct message on Twitter within 24 hours or I will choose another winner.
(The tickets are for specific days this month. You have to be in New York City and able to attend one of the designated performances.)

  1. Jessie Mueller in ON A CLEAR DAY. The moment she stepped on stage, something clicked. The moment she opened her mouth to sing, time stood still. It was the first time I ever saw a star being born, and that feeling was incredible.

  2. Best Broadway Debut: Cybill Shepherd in ‘The Best Man’. She was the best actor in the show, and never looked better!

  3. Clemence Poesy in Cyrano De Bergerac. She was/is a stunning Roxane and moved me to tears on multiple occasions. @jillwoodwardsm

  4. The cast of bring it on should be recognized. Not for a singular performance but for the fact that it featured the most number of actors making their broadway debuts!

  5. Robin Williams in BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO. He looked amazing, and was ferociously funny as ever. @bitsybitsybitsy

  6. I’m totally going to have to go with Jessie Meuller in On A Clear Day. That girl was a STAR. The voice of an angel and the acting chops to boot. The minute she stepped on stage I knew big things were in store for her.

  7. Thanks for participating. I generated a number from Random.org, and have attempted to reach the person whose response corresponds to that number. That person has 24 hours to respond — until 8 a.m. October 11th — before I pick somebody else.

  9. I know the contest is over, but the answer has to be Nina Arianda in BORN YESTERDAY. I had never heard of this girl, and suddenly she was a star. She mopped the floor with her seasoned, Hollywood co-stars. If you remembered nothing else about that play, you remembered her performance, and she managed to top herself the very next year with VENUS IN FUR. I’ve never witnessed a more impressive debut, and I’m proud to say I was there.

  10. The person who won the drawing for the tickets is unreachable by Direct Message.( I really shouldn’t have to track down winners!) So I have conducted a second drawing and reached out to a new person who has until tomorrow morning to respond.

  11. Congratulations to Amanda Schwartz for winning the random drawing for two tickets to The Heiress.
