The Heiress, a celebrated play loosely based on the novel “Washington Square” by Henry James, is the story of Catherine Sloper, the shy and sheltered daughter of a prominent New Yorker, caught between the demands of an emotionally distant father and the attentions of a passionate young suitor. It is playing at Walter Kerr Theater (219 W. 48thStreet) through February 10th, 2013. It opens November 1, 2012.

I know the contest is over, but the answer has to be Nina Arianda in BORN YESTERDAY. I had never heard of this girl, and suddenly she was a star. She mopped the floor with her seasoned, Hollywood co-stars. If you remembered nothing else about that play, you remembered her performance, and she managed to top herself the very next year with VENUS IN FUR. I’ve never witnessed a more impressive debut, and I’m proud to say I was there.
