On Valentine’s Day 2025, What Broadway Says About Love

Nightly on Broadway nowadays, one title character professes her love to the other title character:
“My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite”

Is there a more beautiful articulation of love on a Broadway stage this Valentine’s Day than the verses in “Romeo + Juliet”? Probably not. But there are certainly funnier. The characters of many of the currently running Broadway shows weigh in on this most nettlesome and sustaining of emotions. A sample below:

From & Juliet:

Francois: I just proposed to Juliet.
May:You must be so in love. You two just met.
Francois: I’d never even kissed a girl before.
May: But still, you’re moving forward
Francois: No regrets.
May: You’d never kissed a girl before?
Francois: It’s true.
May: So you’ve got nothing to compare it to.
(They look at each other. The energy is palpable. They kiss, tentatively, then both pull back, surprised…sing lyrics of “I Kissed a Girl” then kiss again)…
May: Okay, but you know that I’m not a girl, right? If that’s what you–
Francois: It doesn’t matter to me. I just like kissing you.

From Aladdin:

jasmine: A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I’m way up here
 It’s crystal clear that
Now I’m in a whole new world with you

From All In

(Simon Rich’s “History Report”): “Sometimes, in those days, when someone agreed to go out on a date with you, they were still undecided about the naked thing, and wanted to learn more personal information about you before making up their mind. Since this was before social media, the only way to get this personal information was by asking people questions to their face, as if their actual, living, breathing face was their social-media profile.”

From Gypsy:

Rose: Lucky, you’re a man who likes children,
That’s an important sign.
Lucky, i’m a woman with children-
Small world isn’t it?
Funny, isn’t it?

Herbie: isn’t it?

Both: small, and funny, and fine.

From Hells Kitchen

Davis:

Sometimes I love ya, sometimes you make me blue
Sometimes I feel good, at times I feel used
Lovin’ you, darlin’, makes me so confused

I keep fallin’in and out of
Of love with you
I never loved someone
The way I’m lovin’ you

From Maybe Happy Ending

Claire: So we’re in love.

Oliver: Definitely. What do we do?

Claire: Stop? While we still can?

Oliver: Love is unstable; love is well-known to have an equal if not greater tendency to create pain rather than joy; love makes people, and as far as we know, robots, act irrationally

Claire: And we’re falling apart. Don’t forget that one.

Oliver: But… before we stop…

They say when you’re lovers
You gotta try dancing… So let’s give it a try!
And after i’ve learned not to step on your toe –
then i can let you go.

From Oh, Mary

Mary: Abraham! The war is over! Now I can do cabaret!
Abraham: No. But I have given it some thought and I’ve decided– MARY: But you said cabaret was inappropriate because we’re at war but the– ABRAHAM: Will you let me finish?!
Mary: Will you let me start?! Abraham, tell me what has changed with you? You used to love cabaret. You always said you loved my madcap medleys!
Abraham: No, I said I heard your madcap medleys.
Mary: You were there every night! Singing along!
Abraham: I was young and confused! Now let it go!
Mary: Why are you so ashamed? Cabaret brought us together. We fell in love at the cabaret!
Abraham:: You better not repeat that to anyone! We fell in love at a dance in Illinois. That’s the story!
