Described below are forty-seven shows opening over nineteen days in April. That beats even the Broadway schedule for the month. And tickets are a lot cheaper — no more than $35, and as little as $5. Each show offers as many as five performances apiece; that often includes one that is live-streamed.

The New York City Fringe Festival is not the same as The New York International Fringe Festival, which ran (at first every August) from 1997 to 2019, and was one of the most highly attended events in the city, with some 75,000 tickets sold each year. The New York City Fringe Festival is simply the new name for what was until this year called FRIGID New York Festival. Since 2007, it has been presented every February — one of the seven theater festivals (most notably the Fire This Time Festival) under the auspices of the non-profit theater company Frigid New York, founded by Erez Ziv. Frigid is upfront about the reasons for the rebranding — to get more attention. But the newly named New York Fringe Festival is much smaller than the original New York International Fringe Festival was at its height, it’s not really international (although there are two shows from Canada, and one from Mexico), and it’s not juried. The shows are chosen by lottery. Also: “100 percent of box office proceeds go directly to the artists whose work is being presented.”

The festival is being presented from April 3 to April 21 in three venues. There are also two shows in other locations, labeled site-specific — both of which sound among the most interesting of the offerings.
