What Broadway says about love on Valentine’s Day 2024

Shows currently on Broadway are full of love and kisses — some sweet, sexy, some with a decidedly dark edge — as these scenes and shots attest:

From & Juliet:

Francois: I just proposed to Juliet.
May:You must be so in love. You two just met.
Francois: I’d never even kissed a girl before.
May: But still, you’re moving forward
Francois: No regrets.
May: You’d never kissed a girl before?
Francois: It’s true.
May: So you’ve got nothing to compare it to.
(They look at each other. The energy is palpable. They kiss, tentatively, then both pull back, surprised…sing lyrics of “I Kissed a Girl” then kiss again)…
May: Okay, but you know that I’m not a girl, right? If that’s what you–
Francois: It doesn’t matter to me. I just like kissing you.

From Appropriate:

Toni. You know what I need? For you to back the hell up.
I think I just figured you out. You’re one of those ‘Sweet Girls,’ aren’t you? Do people ever call you that? ‘Sweet?’ “Aww, Trisha, you’re so sweet.” I haven’t seen one of you in a long time. In fact, I wonder now if I used to be one of you. I think I remember running around being “sweet” and twenty-three, thinking I knew everything and was gonna save everybody by ‘loving’ them into submission. God. But you know what happens to Sweet Girls? Life gobbles you up – faster than the others because we run around making ourselves so tasty, sprinkling our sugar all over everyone else’s shit. But let me tell you now what no one ever told me: you don’t get an unlimited supply. That sugar is gonna run out and that’s when they’ll start calling you bitter. So don’t be in such a hurry to waste it – and certainly not on Frank. You’re not going to fix him. I tried – this whole family’s tried – but Frank is going to be who he is, which is a grown man and a hot dog mess. You have a long road ahead. So take my advice: save some of this sweetness for yourself – save some of you for you.
River. No offense, Toni, but you and I are not the same person and Franz has got sweetness in him, too –
Toni: No, honey, Frank has got a sweet tooth –
River: And what we have is love – real love – and that is not something that runs out –
Toni: (Getting up to go). Okay, honey
River. And we’re going to be a family
Toni: All right, see you at the wedding.
River: No, Toni. I don’t think you get it. I’m having his baby. I’m pregnant.

From Kimberly Akimbo:

Kimberly:….That stuff with my dad was kinda humiliating.
Seth: He was just doing his job. Telling me to not kiss you and  stuff?
Kimberly: Yeah, we don’t really need to talk about it.
Seth: Okay, yeah, that makes sense. (pause)
I was thinking though – um, if you wanted me to, I’d do it anyway.
Kimberly:What?
Seth: I know he’s supposed to be protective and everything, but you might want to do something that he thinks you don’t want to do. So if you wanted to be like, kissed or whatever, then I’d totally do it.
(beat)
As a friend, you know? Like if you just wanted someone to practice on?
(beat)
But not if you didn’t want to, obviously. I‘m just saying, I’m not afraid of your Dad.
I mean I am, but I’m assuming you wouldn’t tell him, so in that case I wouldn’t be. Afraid of him, I mean.
(no response)
I don’t want you to think that that’s why I’ve been hanging out with you. I wasn’t even thinking about kissing you until your Dad brought it up. But then when he did, I was like, huh. So…I don’t know. I guess…if you ever want to, just let me know.
Kimberly: Okay.

From Days of Wine and Roses

Kirsten: A lots happened, lots of detours, but they were nothing; I never looked at them.
Joe. Kirs, it’s—
Kirsten. I never gave anything out of myself. I thought they’d help me from being so lonely but I was just as lonely, because love is the only thing that keeps you from being lonely and I didn’t have that.
Joe: Kirs … There’s a little girl asleep in there that would just love to wake up and see you here.
Kirsten. Remember that first night, looking out on the water? The way it looks when you look too close? But you gave me the magic key to seeing it all with brave, fresh eyes …
Joe: It was us all along, that’s the magic. That’s the adventure: being sober is the most dangerous thing.

From Merrily We Roll Along

Minister: My dear friends, good evening. Before the marriage vows, Frank and Beth have each asked to speak. Frank?
Frank: Beth, I am so happy to be marrying you in the very place where I met you and grew to love you. [Actually, I’m just happy to be marrying you, period! And I would like very much to thank our dear, close friends for being with us on this, the most important moment in both of our lives.
Minister: Beth?
Beth: NOT A DAY GOES BY…
Mary: NOT A SINGLE DAY…
Mary, Beth: BUT YOU’RE SOMEWHERE A PART OF MY LIFE AND IT LOOKS LIKE YOU’LL STAY.
Frank, Mary: AS THE DAYS GO BY,
I KEEP THINKING, WHEN DOES IT END?
Beth: THAT IT CAN’T GET MUCH BETTER MUCH LONGER
BUT IT ONLY GETS BETTER AND STRONGER
AND DEEPER AND NEARER
Frank, Beth: AND SIMPLER AND FREE-ER AND RICHER AND CLEARER
Trio: AND NO,
NOT A DAY GOES BY,
Mary: NOT A BLESSED DAY
Beth, Mary: BUT YOU SOMEWHERE COME INTO MY LIFE AND YOU DON’T GO AWAY.
Trio: AND I HAVE TO SAY, IF YOU DO, I’LL DIE.
Frank,Beth: I WANT DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY
Trio: AFTER DAY AFTER DAY
AFTER DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY TILL THE DAYS GO BY,
Frank, Beth: TILL THE DAYS GO BY,
Mary: TILL THE DAYS GO BY!…
Frank and Beth kiss.
