The Baker’s Wife

“The Baker’s Wife” offers dual stories of redemption that make it feel designed for the holidays: There is the fable of all the villagers in a small French town setting aside their petty squabbles to repair their baker’s marriage, thus giving them back their daily bread.   Then there is the equally unlikely story of a 1976 musical with great promise [that flopped.]..The production at Classic Stage Company is so inviting that it’s hard for me to fathom  what went wrong half a century ago….

Broadway marquees will dim for Tom Stoppard Tuesday evening Dec 2. Stoppard, who died over the weekend at age 88, leaves an extraordinary legacy.
Tom Stoppard, 1937 – 2025 I look at his plays over the past half century, and especially the last decade.

Marquees will also dim on December 9 for: Matthew Silver, Jerry Adler, Polly Holliday, Lauren B. Stevens, Robert Redford, John Christopher Jones, Patricia Routledge, Ted Hartley, Diane Keaton, June Lockhart, Diane Ladd, Elizabeth Franz, Pauline Collins, Harriet Slaughter and (again) Tom Stoppard.

“Death of a Salesman” is returning for the seventh time to Broadway, starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, directed by Joe Mantello. Previews will begin Friday, March 6, 2026, the opening is set for April 9; the run is scheduled to conclude on June 1.  Check out my Broadway 2025 2026 Season Preview Guide for more details.

“The Queen of Versailles” will play its final performance on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on January 4, 2026, less than two months after its Nov. 9th opening. 

LIberation and Initiative are among the plays written by the finalists chosen for the 48th Annual Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the largest and oldest award recognizing women+ writers for plays of outstanding quality written for the English-speaking theater.

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani named a 28-member Arts and Culture Transition Committee. The theate-related members includes Kamilah Forbes of the Apollo Theatre, Mino Lora of The Peoples Theatre, Patricia McGregor of NY Theatre Workshop, Legacy Russell of the Kitchen, Kenny Savoca of IATSE 161, and Dija Vij of Powerhouse Arts.
