Watch Broadway: A Jewish Journey (Happy New Year!)

“You’ll Be Back” from “Hamilton” with Yiddish lyrics!? That’s one of the songs in the 90-minute concert below sung by four cantors and nine Broadway veterans, including Julie Benko, Arielle Jacobs, Zachary Piser, and Seth Rudetsky, recorded at Park Avenue Synagogue in June, released now in honor of Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish Year 5786. The concert is meant to celebrate the legacy of Jewish composers who shaped Broadway “and brought the melodies of the synagogue to the stage….” — although it obviously takes some liberties.

The commentary is sometimes schmaltzy, the commercial interruptions are tacky, but who can resist the music of Irving Berlin, Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Larson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Pasek and Paul, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Steven Schwartz, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Arlen (Over the Rainbow), Jerry Bock (Fiddler on the Roof), Lionel Bart (Oliver), interspersed with Yiddish and Hebrew melodies.
