Broadway 2025 2026 Season Preview Guide

Below is my preview guide of Broadway openings* in the 2025-2026 season, starting in June with Jean Smart, fresh from her raved-about performance in “Hacks,” returning to Broadway after a quarter of a century, followed by the Broadway debut of Keanu Reeves in “Waiting for Godot”. Other star-studded productions: Kristin Chenoweth and F. Murray Abraham in a new musical by Stephen Schwartz; Bobby Cannavale, James Corden, and  Neil Patrick Harris in a revival of Art; Joshua Henry, Caissie Levy, and Brandon Uranowitz in a revival of Ragtime; Aaron Tveit and Lea Michele in a revival of Chess.

The list of shows with confirmed venues and dates obviously will grow.

Jeff Ross: Take A Banana for The Ride

But as he struggles to accept the consequences of his actions and build a new life, he finds an unusual source of salvation: the parents of the boy he killed.

These two strangers begin their journey together, navigating New York City, secrets, and second chances.

The 2015 play, about an elderly woman in the near future whose grown children give her a robot caregiver, is even more relevant with the ascendance of AI, but it’s also insightful about family dynamics. My review of it Off-Broadway in 2015.

All Out: Comedy about Ambition

In a follow-up to last year’s All In, the cast reads the short stories by Simon Rich “about ego, envy, greed, and basically just New Yorkers in general.”

An unexpected and intense romance between a lonely waitress (Coon) and a mysterious drifter (Smallwood) in a seedy Oklahoma motel room twists into something far more dangerous. This is a transfer of a recent Steppenwolf production of Letts’ 1996 play.

Lithgow portrays children’s book author Roald Dahl on a day in 1983 when he is accused of being an antisemite because of his review of a picture book about the Israeli army’s siege of West Beirut during the 1982 Lebanon War. The production originated in London.

A stage musical based on the six episodes in the first season of the Apple TV+ series , in which a couple stumble onto a magical town where everybody breaks into pastiche songs of the Golden Age of Broadway musicals. The stage version was produced earlier in 2025 at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center, with series choreographer Christopher Gattelli directing and choreographing. My review of the TV series’ first season.

THE BALUSTERS

Still, no one is prepared for the neighbor-versus-neighbor battle royale that ensues when a newcomer to the board suggests the unthinkable: installing a stop sign on the corner of the enclave’s prettiest block.

This third production of August Wilson’s play, part of his 10-part American Century Cycle, takes place in 1911 in a Pittsburgh boarding house run by Seth and Bertha Holly (Cedric and Henson), a refuge for Black travelers navigating the upheaval of the Great Migration.  Then a mysterious stranger arrives with his young daughter.

LOST BOYS

The musical is based on the 1987 film, a supernatural horror-comedy directed by Joel Schumacher, which follows two teenage brothers who move with their divorced mother to the fictional town of Santa Carla, California, only to discover that the town is a haven for vampires.

SUGAR DADDY

Morrison’s solo play is about transforming grief into humor on a journey of love, loss, diabetes, seagull attacks, and a few extraordinary coincidences. It previously played at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Off-Broadway’s SoHo Playhouse.

DOLLY: AN ORIGINAL MUSICAL

A new bio-musical inspired by the life and career of Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. It was announced to open on Broadway in 2026 after a premiere production in Nashville.

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL

Director: Rob Ashford
A musical adaptation of John Berendt’s 1994 Pulitzer finalist novel about the eccentric denizens of Savannah, Georgia and a real-life vicious murder.

* Opening night is usually not the same as the first performance on Broadway. There is usually a “preview period” that can last days or weeks, sometimes months. But professional reviews are forbidden from being published until opening nigh. I organize this calendar by opening night as a way to support the continuing relevance of theater reviewing.
