Giving Tuesday 2023: A List of NYC Theaters and Theater Charities

On this twelfth annual #GivingTuesday (created in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y), consider donating to theater in New York.

Below, an alphabetical list of more than 100 New York theaters and theater companies, with links to their home page or donate page. But first a shorter list of charitable, service, advocacy and educational theater organizations based in New York. These are all non-profits. Donations to them are tax deductible.

I’ve put an asterisk next to those organizations that Charity Navigator has given its highest rating (four stars), which means they fulfilled at least ninety percent of the criteria for accountability, transparency, financial health, impact and results. (It need be said that some theaters and theater organizations are too new, or too small, to have been rated: “The absence of a score does not indicate a positive or negative assessment, it only indicates that we have not yet evaluated the organization.”) I encourage you to look up the individual charities on the Charity Navigator site, even those with an asterisk. Some of the information available, such as “salary of key persons,” is eye-opening and might help you determine which to support.

I’ve tried to keep this list up to date (adding an asterisk to those that have jumped in the ratings, removing one from those that have declined; adding new theaters of those that have turned non-profit, removing those that have gone out of business or turned into for-profit.) If any worthies are missing, please provide the name and link in the Comments sections.
