In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which President Joe Biden first formally recognized as a national holiday in 2021, to be celebrated the second Monday of October (today!) – not coincidentally the same day as Columbus Day, which has been one of the ten official federal holidays in the United States since 1937 – here is a list of the tribal nations in New York State, recognized either by the federal or state government. There are reportedly a total of 574 federally recognized tribal nations throughout the U.S.

- Cayuga Nation
- Oneida Nation of New York
- Onondaga Nation
- Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe
- Seneca Nation of Indians
- Shinnecock Indian Nation
- Tonawanda Band of Seneca
- Tuscarora Nation of New York
- Unkechaug Nation
Note on Native American Theater:

“The Thanksgiving Play,” by Larissa FastHorse (of the Sicangu Lakota Nation) is scheduled for Broadway’s Hayes Theater in Spring 2023. (My review of The Thanksgiving Play Off-Broadway in 2018)
