Below is the statement today that the former First Lady Michelle Obama posted on Twitter after yesterday’s mob takeover of the U.S.Capitol.
“I hurt for our country. And I wish I had all the solutions to make things better….All I know is now is a time for true patriotism.”
Obama makes three basic points about the ugliness at the Capitol — that the rioters would have been treated differently had they been Black; that it’s time for social media “to stop enabling this monstrous behavior,” and it’s time “for those who voted for this president to see the reality of what they’ve supported.”
Her comments come at a time when both Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer have called for the removal of Donald Trump as president — either through the 25th amendment, or by a second impeachment.
Facebook has suspended the president’s account “indefinitely” — at least until after Joe Biden’s Inauguration. Twitter suspended Trump’s account, but has restored it.
