“Broadway Does Mothers Day”

In the hour-long video, the casts of more than a dozen Broadway shows, and their mothers…and their kids… along with their pets….made jokes, performed shtick, danced, sang, and told stories, to raise theatergoer spirits, and raise funds for Broadway Cares COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund. Some major stars even auditioned to play Mama Rose in Gypsy.

In the opening skit, Bette Midler vowed to save Mother’s Day, calling up and calling on the casts of Hello, Dolly, who sing “Put on Your Sunday Clothes.”  In the closing number, the cast of Hamilton repurposed the comic King George “You’ll Be Back,” changing the lyrics to “We’ll Be Back.”  And that was of course the hope, and the pang, underneath this unusual variety show.
