“For the males in the room,” host Seth Meyers began, “this is the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to have your name read aloud.” The women in attendance (and many of the men) wore black to register a protest against sexual harassment.
It’s been a cold first week of the new year, in more ways than one: New accusations of sexual harassment in the theater industry, along with news of greed.
But there are warm spots too. Below are season previews, and a calendar of hopeful events coming up in January, as well as Oprah’s speech at the Golden Globes, just because.

They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics, and they’re our soldiers in the military…”

Not-for-profit theaters contributed more than $2.3 billion to the U.S. economy and attracted 31 million attendees, according to TCG’s Theatre Facts 2016, just released
Ars Nova, the company that incubated Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, will be the resident theater company of the 199-seat theater in Greenwich House on Barrow Street in the Village (where Sweeney Todd is currently performing.) Beginning in 2019, it will displace Barrow Street Theater, which has been producing shows at Greenwich House since 2003. Ars Nova will keep its current home on 54th Street, which is about half the size of Greenwich House Theater, as a secondary venue focusing on nurturing new talent.
Greenwich House began as a settlement house in 1902 to improve the living conditions of the immigrant population of Greenwich Village. Social services remain its primary focus, but it became a hot venue for cutting edge theater since the hit production of “Gross Indecency” in 1997.

Albert Schultz has resigned from Soulpepper, the Canadian theater he co-founded and led, after lawsuit from four actresses accusing him of sexual harassment and assault. (Soulpepper took over New York’s Signature Theater Center last summer for a month-long presentation of its shows.)
Board of Soulpepper: “All of us on the Board take our oversight responsibility very seriously. Unfortunately, we did not know that Albert Schultz was alleged to have engaged in any harassment. No such complaints ever made their way to the Board.”
Soulpepper artists: “The Soulpepper Artists listed below acknowledge there has been an unhealthy workplace culture for a long time. Unequivocally, the behaviour described in the allegations is not acceptable and has no place at Soulpepper.”
Actors Equity President and former Miss America Kate Shindle, a target of sexist attacks by ex Miss America CEO, is joining the Miss America board. “The women who were the targets are now in charge of the organization.”
Sara Bareilles, composer and one-time star of “Waitress,” has been cast as Mary Magdalene opposite John Legend in NBC’s special event Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert to be aired Easter Sunday, April 1.
