For its online auction, Playwrights Horizons has come up with dozens of items to bid on — some great; some elaborate; one a really, really bad idea.
The theater’s fundraising online auction, which ends April 15th, is asking for bids on tickets to almost two dozen Broadway shows….and the chance to meet their stars. The Book of Mormon star Nikki James, for example will give a backstage tour to the highest bidder, who also gets two house seats. There are similar deals for Kinky Boots, Matilda, Trip to Bountiful, Wicked.
There are also more elaborate and inventive items, such as the opportunity to play golf with Judd Hirsch, watch David Schwimmer direct, hang out with artistic director Tim Sanford for a day, attend the premiere of “The Walking Dead” Season 4, and go on a six-day safari in South Africa — one of eight getaways offered to the highest bidder.
But they are also offering the chance to bid on a one-month internship with Marc Jacob. Yes, apparently the trend toward unpaid internships is going to the next step — to paid internships where the intern pays.
“This month-long internship will give one couture up-and-comer the priceless opportunity to work in the Collection Accessories Department. Learn the inner workings of the fashion industry from one of its finest design houses.”
The value put on the internship is $2,000, the “opening bid” set at $1,000. So far, nobody has placed a bid on it — which is both unsurprising and a promising sign.
Um… what? PH is going all Devil Wears Prada on us.
