Kinky Boots Ticket Giveaway Contest

KinkyBootsStarkSandsBillyPorter

Update February 19: The contest is closed. Check out Adele, Rufus Wainwright and Lady Gaga on Broadway to find out who won the drawing at Random.org, but also to see some of your more interesting answers.

Ticket Giveaway: Win two tickets to see “Kinky Boots,” the Broadway musical based on the 2005 film that tells the true story of a man who saves his family’s shoe factory by partnering with the fabulous female-impersonating entertainer Lola to manufacture some sturdy stilettos. The songs are written by Cyndi Lauper, best-known for “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” making her Broadway songwriting debut, and the libretto is by Harvey Fierstein (Newsies, Torch Song Trilogy, etc.). The cast of 33 includes Stark Sands (American Idiot) and Billy Porter (Grease). It is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, his 19th Broadway show.KinkyBootsposter

“Kinky Boots” begins performances on March 3, 2013, and opens on April 4th at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theater.

To enter the contest, answer this question:

 What singer/songwriter would you like to see writing a show for Broadway, and/or performing in one?

Optional second question:

What would the show be about?

Three requirements to win the tickets:

1. Please put your answer in the comments at the bottom of this blog post, because the winner will be chosen through Random.org based on the order of your reply, not its content.

KinkyBoots3But you must answer the (first) question, or your entry will not be approved for submission.

2. Please include in your answer your Twitter name and follow my Twitter feed at @NewYorkTheater so that I can send you a direct message. (If you don’t have a Twitter name, create one. It’s free.)

3. This contest ends Monday, February 18, 2013 at midnight Eastern Time, and I will make the drawing no later than noon the next day. You must respond to my direct message on Twitter within 24 hours or I will choose another winner.

(The tickets are for a performance during the preview period, between March 3 and April 3, 2013. You have to be in New York City and able to attend one of the designated performances.)

Update: This seems kind of obvious, but several people tried to submit “Cyndi Lauper.” She’s doing a Broadway musical — “Kinky Boots” — and so is not an acceptable submission. Pick somebody else.

Another Update: The last several of you have been submitting an answer without telling me your Twitter name. Even if your answer appears in the Comments section, you will not be eligible for the drawing.

  1. I feel like telling Bruce Springsteen’s story would be interesting and would have some really great anthems that would work on stage. @RyanCBrinson

  2. I think Brittney Spears would be an interesting show! Her life is like its own soap opera so you have the drama down, just add the right songs and cast the perfect person to play Brittney. I think it would be pretty great. @TaylorNewsom96

  3. I think that Ed Sheeran could write a pretty incredible musical about his own life. His literal rags to riches story could be really inspirational and his music is so emotional and almost theatrical already.
    Twitter name: @wackeal

  4. I think Scott Alan should write an original musical based on his songs. His music is so emotional and tells amazing stories. I would go see anything he writes. Caissie Levy, Jeremy Jordan, Gavin Creel and Sierra Boggess should be in it. @MicheleW_86

  5. Rufus Wainwright, who’s already tried his hand at an opera, could probably write a great musical, I think, and I’d certainly love to see him in it, too! @ladystardust25

  6. Taylor Swift writes, directs, and stars in The Musical Midas, where she plays a girl who cannot find love because every boy she kisses magically transforms into a catchy radio tune. Can she break the curse…or does she even want to? With a special appearance by Kanye West as the Evil King. @underwoodwrites

  7. Metallica could create an outstanding show using their hits as well as new songs. With many of their songs based around fighting and battles, this show could be focused around war. It could be focused on soldiers going out to battle in Iraq and Afghanistan, their trials and tribulations, and about survival. I’d be the first in line. @bbwithpickles

  8. I know it technically is already a thing, but the only artist that I would really want to see a jukebox musical for would be the Spice Girls. Can we please get Viva Forever over here?! @n2natalie

  9. Paul McCartney should do something on Broadway. I think he should do a musical based on his love story with Linda. @ladybirdplane

  10. I think Jay Z should create a hip hop musical, writing all the rhymes, and enlist someone to pen an original book. They did an MTV hip-hop-era of Carmen years back on TV, and it was pretty cool, but it would be amazing to have great rappers and singers tell an original story with hip hop live on stage! @HolliMari

  11. I would love to see the S.O.B.s (sons of Beatles – Julian, James, Dhani and Zac) write a musical about growing up with John, Paul, George and Ringo as their parents. They’re all musicians…it would be amazing! @moonglowpr

  12. Tim McGraw & Faith Hill! Their personal stories alone lend for a such a rich & colorful storyline.
    @TheWriteTeach

  13. I would not be surprised if Billy Joel had a musical in him. He always was a pro at story songs @ Movidude74

  14. I would love to see Rob Thomas write for Broadway!! He has the ability to cross genres and to attract audiences of all ages! His songs and his style would be great for Broadway! @theatregirl831

  15. Would love to see a musical written by Sheryl Crow. She’s had quite a life! Imagine, this musical would feature all her past romantic relationships (ahem, Lance Armstrong) and her battle with cancer. She has enough hits that would be awesome to hear on a Broadway stage! @thismademyday

  16. I know it was rumored for a brief time but Panic at the Disco. Their music has some awesome potential for the stage 🙂
    @alesandrak

  17. Ingrid Michaelson! Her music would create a beautiful once-esque musical. (Also I would just really love it if something from Kerrigan and Lowdermilk could get to the great white way) @jcookfair2

  18. I would love to see Rufus Wainwright write a show. It would be about a pouty self centered though sensitive boy in the process of trying to straighten out his life meets boy and his world opens up and he changes. He could star or Jonathan Groff could star in it.

  19. Alanis Morissette could compose a thrilling score for a stage production I bet. Think mostly her ‘Jagged Little Pill’ album for a point of reference. The plot could be centered around a girl, in a coming-of-age story style. I see it preferably set in the 90’s haha.

    @BeauCybulski

  20. @646guy says it should be The B-52s and called, of course, Love Shack or Deadbeat Club. If it was Deadbeat Club it should be like the kids of the Breakfast Club in detention again….

  21. I would love to see Barry Manilow’s “Harmony” come to Broadway! Barry is my favorite male performer ever!
    @jordonhensley

  22. It would absolutely be a Bruce Springsteen musical – not jukebox, but at least written by him. Subject matter? Angsty.

    @kmpilecki

  23. I would watch a Backstreet Boys musical all day. Kind of like Altar Boyz, but not. Maybe with Matt Doyle thrown in?
    @verticallimes

  24. Cyndi Lauper on broadway doing a musical
    Spanning her entire carrer from Blue Angel to Memphis album, lots of changes of costumes,wigs and style of music!
    From the WW fights to videos incernation to motherhood and LGBT activist.
    Twitter @JulianOmar1

  25. I say R Kelly!!! He is very creative & talented! May about having the gift to play & create music but not being able to read or write it. I would also like a little Bruno Mars!

  26. How about Peter Gabriel, his music would be so amazing in a musical.A “Say Anything” Type musical featuring only his music.

  27. would love to see Bowie bring something to life on stage – much like Tommy and American Idiot it would be great to see a concept album brought to life! @meganmarysmith
