A winter storm shut down city schools, but all Broadway shows (matinees and evenings) played as scheduled on Wednesday.

(A handful of Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway shows were canceled. See below.)

Broadway and the Blizzard: Questions and Answers

When snow begins to fall, New Yorkers ask one question — how bad will it get? — and New York theatergoers ask three more:

Will the shows be canceled?

Will shows offer a snow day discount?

What if I can’t make it to a show that hasn’t been canceled?

Here are some answers:

The two questions theatergoers want answered whenever a big snowstorm threatens are:

Will the shows be canceled?

Will there be a snow day discount?

In general, it is rare that the Broadway League will announce the cancellation of a show. It hasn’t happened so far in 2014 (as of February 15th.) But if you cannot make it to a show, you should contact your point of purchase  in advance.

As for snow day discounts — Look on Twitter; check out the Twitter feed of your favorite show(s). They are unlikely to advertise their snow day discounts on their website.

February 13, 2014 update:

All Broadway shows played as scheduled on Thursday, February 13, 2014.  It’s unlikely that any Broadway shows will be canceled on Friday.

However, some cancellations have been announced Off-Broadway: Signature Theatre has cancelled “Our Funny Valentine” Cabaret. The Negro Ensemble Company has canceled Friday’s Lillias White benefit concert “A Woman in Love.

Click here for news about the second (possible) blizzard of 2014, on January 21st.

The winter storm named Hercules, according to weather reports, will “pummel” the Northeast, including New York City. The National Weather Service has issued a “blizzard warning”which will make “travel extremely dangerous.”

Update Friday morning January 3: Despite the snowstorm that has covered much of the area, all Broadway shows will play as scheduled Jan. 3, according to The Broadway League.

Remember: Because of the holidays, five Broadway shows have added Friday matinees. (Click here for full schedule of planned Broadway performances Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)

To encourage theatergoers to throw caution to the windchill (expected to be around zero degrees Fahrenheit), several theaters are offering storm discounts. Here are the details so far:

A Night With Janis Joplin writes: “Special offer: tonight, tomorrow, and Sat matinee tix starting at $32 w/code JJSNOW.”

After Midnight writes Friday:  “Mention SNOW at the box office to save 50% on great tix for today’s 2 & 8p shows.”

Roundabout Theatre wrote on Thursday:  “SNOW DAY SPECIAL! We’re offering $20 tix to #MACHINAL at 8pm tonight. Purchase at the American Airlines Box Office only with a metro card.”

Manhattan Theater Club writes on Friday: “Snow Day Special: All tickets to tonight’s first preview of #OutsideMullingar are only $50 using code OMSNW14! Tonight only, act fast!”

Perhaps, most aptly, Disaster!  is offering $30 tickets, if you show up at the box office of the St. Luke’s Theater and use the code: DISNOW

Statement on the storm from Mayor Bill deBlasio: “This has been and remains a dangerous storm. It is going to be bitter cold today, and New Yorkers need to be extremely careful going outdoors. The best things people can do are to stay off the roads so we can clear them as fast as possible, and to check in on elderly and vulnerable neighbors who might need help this morning.”
