The Portuguese Kid Review: Jason Alexander in Shanley Cheesy Comedy

Jason Alexander plays a Mama’s boy who recently married a “Puerto Rican firecracker” half his age; Sherie Rene Scott, a twice-widowed Greek bombshell, is shacking up with a dumb, moon-struck Italian half her age. The Puerto Rican firecracker and the moon-struck Italian were once an item. The Mama’s boy and the bombshell have been friends since childhood, and have had the hots for one another all that time without realizing it.

“The Portuguese Kid,” the latest play written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, is as predictable as it is old-fashioned – a hoary pseudo-romantic comedy trafficking in insulting stereotypes that died well before Don Rickles did. If there are any larger or deeper questions the show provokes, they are not about gender relations given the current political climate, as a few seconds of dialogue may lead you to believe. They’re more along the lines of: Why would the Manhattan Theatre Club produce such a show?

Off Broadway Spring 2016 Guide

As Hamilton director Thomas Kail makes clear this season, Broadway may beckon, but Off-Broadway is the room where it happens.

Kail is directing two plays Off-Broadway – “Dry Powder” at the Public, starring The Office’s John Krasinski making his New York stage debut, and “Daphne’s Dive” at the Signature, written by Pulitzer-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, who shares Broadway credentials with both Kail and Lin-Manuel Miranda. (She is the book writer for Miranda’s “In The Heights.”)

Danai Gurira, who until last year was best known for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead TV series, will see her play “Eclipsed” transfer from Off-Broadway to Broadway this season. But one day after “Eclipsed” is scheduled to open, a second play of hers, ‘Familiar,” is opening at Off Broadway’s Playwrights Horizons.

Even Harold Prince — as in the Prince of Broadway — is directing a new musical Off-Broadway this season, his first new work for a New York stage in nine years.

If the line between Broadway and Off-Broadway seems increasingly porous, there are still significant differences, which require separate approaches.  Broadway is more or less a collection of random individual potential hits or misses. (See my Broadway Spring 2016 Preview Guide.)  Off-Broadway is not as easy to get your hands around — there are many more shows and most have limited runs; the theaters are more spread out geographically and far more numerous — some 200 theaters/theater companies, or five times the number of Broadway houses.  But it also features a solid number of producing theaters, who reliably present a rich, adventurous and diverse season of shows, at lower prices than Broadway.

It thus makes sense to organize an Off-Broadway preview by focusing on these individual seasons, presented in the order of my preference for the particular theaters   (determined by such factors as their recent track record, the promise of the new season, and by the overall experience I’ve had with the theater, both as theatergoer and as critic.)

I’ve put a red check mark —  — besides ten about which I’m especially excited, or intrigued, or at least notably hopeful. This can’t count as a recommendation, because I haven’t seen them yet. I plan to see almost everything below, and expect to be surprised.

What Is Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off Broadway?

Off-Broadway theaters, by definition, have anywhere from 100 to 499 seats. If a theater has more seats than that, it’s a Broadway house. If it has fewer, it’s Off-Off Broadway.

There are some terrific Off-Off Broadway theaters, sometimes confused for Off-Broadway. These include (but are not limited to) The FleaLabyrinth Theater, and LaMaMa ETC.

Outside Mullingar Review: Debra Messing’s Weird Broadway Debut

If you didn’t speak English, or could somehow turn off the sound of
“Outside Mullingar,” John Patrick Shanley’s charming, wonderfully acted and overly weird romantic comedy, the final scene between Debra Messing, making her Broadway debut, and Brian F. O’Byrne, reliable Broadway veteran, would be a hugely satisfying mime show about two shy middle aged people finally revealing their love for one another: awkward squirming turning to tense confrontation melting into relieved embrace.

But, alas, we have to listen as well to the last 10 minutes of this otherwise carefully crafted 95-minute play. If Shanley’s premise is a wee implausible, his resolution is as loony as his characters are supposed to be, and far less appealing. I won’t spoil the surprise ending, but it does a fine job on its own of spoiling what’s come before.

The Reillys and the Muldoons have owned neighboring farms in Ireland for generations.  As the play begins,  there’s been a funeral, and all who remain from the two clan are Anthony Reilly (O’Byrne) and his father Tony (the incomparable Peter Maloney); and Rosemary Muldoon (Messing) and her mother Aoife (a persuasive Dearbhla Molloy.)  In seven scenes that unfold over several years, we learn that both mother and father are not long for this world, and that both are worried about their unmarried children; that Tony plans to sell the farm out from under his son Anthony to an American cousin, since he doesn’t believe that Anthony will ever get married, and because he questions Anthony’s sanity. We also learn that Rosemary has been secretly in love with Anthony since he accidentally knocked her over when she was seven years old and he had just turned 13.  For his part, Anthony, shunned by a first love, has closed up,  as resigned to sadness and solitude as he is to the rain and gloom of the Irish Midlands.

Shanley’s dialogue in the first few scenes is witty in subtler ways than his movie “Moonstruck.” There are a few touching moments, and insights into characters’ pessimism, dark moods, and insecurities, as well as ambiguities that suggest this is the same playwright who wrote “Doubt.” But mostly “Outside Mullingar” never pretends to be much more than a trifle – something close to an Irish folk tale, and ultimately a slice of blarney —   by a talented Bronx-born playwright who may have watched too many Maureen O’Hara movies.

New York New York Festival at Labyrinth Theater

The community of ex-cons, junkies and crackheads crowding into the Bank Street Theater are surrounded by love, laughter and wild applause. They are the characters peopling  Stephen Adly Giurgis’ 1999 play, “In Arabia, We’d All Be King.” It is the second night of the week-long New York, New York Festival — the first-ever festival featuring plays about New York City — presented though March 24 for free by the Labyrinth Theater, the theater company that Giurgis joined in 1994, and that turned him from an actor into a playwright. He is now best-known for “The Motherfucker With The Hat,” which was a hit on Broadway. But you can glimpse where those characters and themes came from in this earlier play, which was given a reading, directed by Guirgis, with a cast of a dozen professional actors, including Guirgis himself (bottom left in photograph) and such familiar performers as Colman Domingo, Craig “muMs” Grant and Liza Colon-Zayas, who was in the cast of the original production.

“This was the first play I wrote where I wanted to show what was going on internally, not just get a laugh every few moments,” Giurgis said in a brief conversation after the reading. (The play, though, gets lots of laughs.) “I was struggling in life….I was spending too much time outside the theater”

Tickets are free to all readings in the New York New York Festival, but you have to enter a digital lottery the day of the performance.
