Mothers once again took to the stage on Broadway in the season just ended , in not always flattering but always knowing depictions. On Mothers Day this Sunday, Audra McDonald will try to browbeat her daughters into stardom as Madame Rose in Gypsy, Justina Machado as Carmen will nag her daughters to get married in Real Women Have Curves: The Musical, while LaTanya Richardson Jackson will try to shield her sons as Claudine Jackson in Purpose. Cole Escola as Mary Todd Lincoln will ignore her sons in Oh, Mary, and Rosie Benton as Virginia Creel will try to have her son locked up before he kills again in Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Idina Menzel as Jesse will mourn the loss of her son in Redwood.
And then there are the mothers who have finished their runs, but are still appreciated — as every mother should be — as witness by acknowledgement in various theater awards, among them Tony nominees Laura Donnelly as a stage mother and one of the daughters she smothered in The Hills of California and Jessica Hecht in Eureka Day, whose children we never see, but drive her actions.)
It’s unfair to limit the mothers on stage to Broadway, when so many shows this year were about a son’s relationship with his mother — Conversations with My Mothere, Amm(i)gone — including one that features the playwright/director/performer’s actual mother, “Rheology”
Every season seems to offer supportive mothers and complicated ones. Here are ten videos by or about mothers in seasons past.
