To celebrate Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday (which actually took place on March 22, 2020), Raúl Esparza organized a concert extravaganza on the 50th anniversary of the opening of Sondheim’s Company, featuring some 45 songs and tributes over two and a half hours (not including the hour-long technical delay)  Below are both the entire show, courtesy of Broadway.Com,  and the playlist. But first, some highlights.

Raúl Esparza sings “Take Me To The World” from Evening Primrose as part of the concert he organized (and named after that song). In case the musical is unfamiliar to you, it was written specifically for the TV series, ABC Stage 67, broadcast on November 16, 1966, and never made it to Broadway. With a book by James Goldman based on a John Collier’s short story, it’s a spooky tale about a group who secretly live in a department store, never venturing outside.

Annaleigh Ashford and Jake Gyllenhaal sing “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George

Patti LuPone sings “Anyone Can Whistle,” from one of the earliest musicals for which he supplied the full score (1964), while she reveals another room in her fabulous home.

Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, & Meryl Streep sing “The Ladies Who Lunch” from Company, and very convincingly simulate drinking. (If there was an 11 o’clock number in this concert, this was it — and it occurred at 11 o’clock.)

You’ll notice that none of these video clips offered the full song. For that, the complete concert, below. (The full Ladies Who Lunch number, for example, starts at around 158:45.) The concert is a fundraiser for ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty)

For what it’s worth, the songs from Into The Woods (which debuted on Broadway in 1987) were the most frequently picked by the performers, followed by a tie between Follies (1971) and Sunday in the Park With George (1983).
