Magical Moments on Stage in 2015

shows2015

There were many worthwhile moments in the shows I saw in 2015. The most memorable ones were not always exciting or transcendent or beautiful, although some were — such as the ship with Kelli O’Hara gliding far out from the proscenium in “the King and I” or Cynthia Erivo singing “I’m Here” in “The Color Purple.”  Other moments, though, were shocking, or funny, or insightful, or downright creepy, such as Daphne Rubin-Vega’s climactic moment in “Empanada Loca.”  What made the moments magical was that they seemed to share a quality unique to live theater — the feeling that something rare is happening right in front of you, and just for you,  even though (you know but refuse to absorb) it is reenacted for audiences in much the same way eight times a week.
