Soul Doctor, free tickets

souldoctor logoUpdate:

William Pe is the winner, by drawing from Random.org. But I’ve put all your answers in a poll: Cher or Mother Teresa: Whose life story should be on Broadway?

Ticket Giveaway: Win two tickets to see “Soul Doctor,”  a musical that tells the story of Shlomo Carlebach, the “Rock Star Rabbi” of the 1960’s.  After his escape from Nazi Germany, the young Rabbi befriended the jazz singer Nina Simone who introduced him to soul and gospel music.  Shlomo created a new sound with melodies that fused his roots with American popular music. “Soul Doctor” will star Eric Anderson (Kinky Boots), who received a 2013 Drama Desk Award nomination for his performance as Shlomo Off-Broadway.

“Soul Doctor” begins performances at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theater  on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 and opens August 15.

To enter the contest, answer this question:

Whose life story would you like to see turned into a Broadway show?

1. Please put your answer in the comments at the bottom of this blog post, because the winner will be chosen through Random.org based on the order of your reply, not its content.

But you must answer the question, complete with an explanation of your choice, or your entry will not be approved for submission.

2. Please include in your answer your Twitter name and follow my Twitter feed at @NewYorkTheater so that I can send you a direct message. (If you don’t have a Twitter name, create one. It’s free.)

3. This contest ends Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at midnight Eastern Time, and I will make the drawing no later than noon the next day. You must respond to my direct message on Twitter within 24 hours or I will choose another winner.

You must also be able to attend one of the eligible performances. The voucher is good for two tickets for performances between July 17th and August 14th, 2013.

Only one comment per contestant please. (You will be disqualified if you submit more than once, so please make sure you have all the requirements — such as your Twitter name — before submitting. All submissions have to be approved, so you won’t necessarily see your entry right away. Please be patient.)

  1. I think that the life story of Joan Rivers would make a very interesting musical. She was a pioneer for female comedy…she’s had her ups, downs, and everywhere in between. Her celebrity has shifted in size over the years, but underneath she still feels like she always has to prove herself. There was a special about her life not too long ago that was heartbreaking; this could be put on stage.

  2. Bruce Springsteen, the early years, a play with music. From a struggling artist to a huge success, how and who he met along the way. @BetteH9

  3. I think Elton John’s story would make a great musical. If we’re going with play, I’d have to say JK Rowling and how she went from being on welfare to conceiving and writing one of, if not, the best selling book series of all time

  4. JIM MORRISON OR THE GRATEFUL DEAD. BOTH BANDS HAVE HAD VERY INTERESTING HISTORY AND FROM WHAT I SEE OF ALL THE MUSIC BASED SHOWS ON BROADWAY, THESE TWO WOULD FIT RIGHT IN.

  5. I’d like to see a dramatization of Frank Rich’s rise to be a make it or break it theatre critic.

  6. I’d like to TINA TURNER’s life story turned into a Broadway musical. I know we already have her biopic, What’s Love Got to Do with It, but it’s about time her music and story be brought to the stage. Imagine the songs, choreography, and costumes! @willfulwill

  7. I’d love to see Bon Jovi’s life turned into a broadway musical. Michael Jackson as well. @robbodnar68

  8. Alexander McQueen, perhaps? Music and theater were already so instrumental in how he presented his fashions and ultimately viewed the world. I can only image how the final production might look.

  9. Mother Teresa! Kinda like a Godspell meets JCSS. A great story and year jerking songs. @bwaymom3

  10. I think Billy Joel’s life should be created into a Broadway musical. He dropped out of school for the cost of his fame. He created legendary music and went through a time of depression and still came out successful.

  11. I would like to see Marilyn Monroe’s life be turned into a broadway show! I know that smash created bombshell but the show would be amazing on a real life broadway stage! Twitter: @kyledmorales

  12. I would like to see Li Cunxin’s life story (Mao’s Last Dancer) turned into a Broadway show. His story is amazing, inspirational, and dramatic. Plus the show would be filled with brilliant dancing. @mymusicboxes

  13. ROCK HUDSON, the musical or play, would catch my fancy. Rock lead a fabulous life and, with the possible exception of Elizabeth Taylor, no star in Hollywood shined brighter. There’s so much great source material out there, I’m actually surprised it hasn’t already happened. @ahrmi
