Update February 19: The contest is closed. Check out Adele, Rufus Wainwright and Lady Gaga on Broadway to find out who won the drawing at Random.org, but also to see some of your more interesting answers.
Ticket Giveaway: Win two tickets to see “Kinky Boots,” the Broadway musical based on the 2005 film that tells the true story of a man who saves his family’s shoe factory by partnering with the fabulous female-impersonating entertainer Lola to manufacture some sturdy stilettos. The songs are written by Cyndi Lauper, best-known for “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” making her Broadway songwriting debut, and the libretto is by Harvey Fierstein (Newsies, Torch Song Trilogy, etc.). The cast of 33 includes Stark Sands (American Idiot) and Billy Porter (Grease). It is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, his 19th Broadway show.
“Kinky Boots” begins performances on March 3, 2013, and opens on April 4th at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theater.
To enter the contest, answer this question:
What singer/songwriter would you like to see writing a show for Broadway, and/or performing in one?
Optional second question:
What would the show be about?
Three requirements to win the tickets:
1. Please put your answer in the comments at the bottom of this blog post, because the winner will be chosen through Random.org based on the order of your reply, not its content.
But you must answer the (first) question, or your entry will not be approved for submission.
2. Please include in your answer your Twitter name and follow my Twitter feed at @NewYorkTheater so that I can send you a direct message. (If you don’t have a Twitter name, create one. It’s free.)
3. This contest ends Monday, February 18, 2013 at midnight Eastern Time, and I will make the drawing no later than noon the next day. You must respond to my direct message on Twitter within 24 hours or I will choose another winner.
(The tickets are for a performance during the preview period, between March 3 and April 3, 2013. You have to be in New York City and able to attend one of the designated performances.)
Update: This seems kind of obvious, but several people tried to submit “Cyndi Lauper.” She’s doing a Broadway musical — “Kinky Boots” — and so is not an acceptable submission. Pick somebody else.
Another Update: The last several of you have been submitting an answer without telling me your Twitter name. Even if your answer appears in the Comments section, you will not be eligible for the drawing.
I think the Pet Shop Boys shoud write a musical…..and it should be a version of Absolutely Fabulous
David Bowie since i loved his voice, Lyrics and Labyrinth.
Bette Midler, it’s about time to return to the Theater.
I’m torn between Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, and Michelle Branch as my answer. I think all three could write compelling and relatable music for the stage just like they do on their albums. I could easily see any of the three of them being on stage, as well – most likely Kelly and Demi rather than Michelle.
@aemaready I want Scissor Sisters to bring they’re Tales of the City musical to Broadway with the original cast from San Fran’s ACT, including Betsy Woold, Wes Taylor, Judy Kaye, Mary Birdsong, Andrew Samonsky, and other terrific actors. Great music and a superb cast telling Maupins classic tales.
Scissor Sisters should write a Wild Party like musical called ‘Let’s Have a Kiki’
L. Gaga in cabaret @candrewandrew
“Weird Al” Yankovic… he has such a strong fan base and a huge collection of interesting music.
@RiverSong33 It could be interesting to see what Jon Bon Jovi or Santana would come up with.
Adele @ruyakoman
Madonna @venedoa
I would love to see Ana Gasteyer on broadway! I would love to see her in any original production that comes out of her hilarious mind.
@fuzzymammals
Would love to see a dark gothic story by Trent Reznor. @hollisst
Kelly Clarkson!! It would be about a major break up, major!
@GoJoe18
I would say Carrie underwood!
It should be about the struggles of a Southern girl who’s father is a drunk and mother is sick so she has to take care of the family!
@woodyactor
P!nk, building off her funhouse tour concept. @mjperry1
James Taylor with the back story for Fire and Rain @montauksunset
Yusef Islam (a/k/a Cat Stevens) has a nice one ready to go: http://www.moonshadowthemusical.com.au/ Do it!
@chasman1957
Todd Rungren’s songbook could be the basis of a wonderful show for Broadway. His songs are catchy, storytelling, very personal, and many already sound like Broadway tunes.
Joni Mitchell’s story and music would make a wonderful show for Broadway.
I keep waiting for The Decemberists to show up writing for the theatre — either using their Hazards of Love album (ready to go with compelling characters and gorgeous music!) or all new material.
@landwarsinasia
David Bowie’s life and music are quite remarkable. Also, Patti Smith’s book, “Just Kids”, has already proved itself as a bestseller, and so beautifully portrays New York life in the early ’70’s.
Seeing that story on Broadway would be fantastic!
Cher it could be about how overwhelming it is to be impersonated by men or Bette midler
I’d like to see ANNIE LENNOX write for a Broadway show that would revolve around the themes of humanitarianism and empowerment. @willfulwill
Definitely Melissa Erheridge with a show that is autobiographical showing her rise to stardom from childhood in Ks
@karma_NY
Rihanna in Diamonds @neolovesmusic
@ericlemon23 Carrie Underwood would be fabulous!
Lady Gaga… yup, I’m going with Lady Gaga. I feel like it would be a good variety. (@MarivicTagala)
I think Ingrid Michaelson should write a quirky, cute musical a la Avenue Q about dating and misadventures in love. It would be fantastic. (@Meg3Gillespie).
Rufus Wainwright, and in it he would play a quirky singer/songwriter given a one-time opportunity by the Muses to rewrite his parent’s courtship and relationship–and the new timeline’s impact on his career and outlook on life. (@Queerbec)
I would love to see Norah Jones write a show and/ or Star in a Broadway show.
I would like to see a Broadway musical set to or based on The Clockwork Dolls’ album “Dramatis Personae.” After all, there are no Steampunk musicals, and the songs already have a storytelling quality to them.
It would be like the old TV show “Firefly” but set in a Steampunk world instead. ..And it would be a musical. Who wouldn’t want that?
I would say Jill Scott shes besutiful, earthly, poetic, artsy I would say maybe a show with a combination of dance and poetry, kids coming out of poor homes, homes with both parents, being in gangs when their only freedom is poetry and dance and Jill Scott leads them the way I would love to see performances from different ethnicity. Sincerely, Cynthia Jimenez Bklyn, NY
Chicago, the band! @randigoblue
Beyonce! @ tskyeodoms1
Kings of Leon. Great songwriters. @taraennis
I would absolutely love to see Adele write a show. To see her perform it would be icing on the cake. She’s such a soulful writer and singer. Second choice: Beyoncé.
@corellianjedi2
Billy Joel writing new songs for a hard-edged NYC love story. Or Sting for a hard-edged London love story. @mlottjr
I think Ed Sheeran could write an amazing moving musical. His lyrics are perfect. Also, based on her Wild Hope writing I think Mandy Moore could write beautiful folk inspired music for a show. @meaghan416
@ohjustjake
I would love Adele to write a musical. Obviously it would be about a break up, but I feel it would be about a woman’s journey from that break up to being an even stronger woman. Adele is such a powerful songwriter that I feel she would write songs that everyone would be able to relate to.
Neil Young, a musical version of the Grapes of Wrath. @lyndacc
Lady Gaga and it should be a funky mash up of her songs
The New Radicals featuring “You’ve Got a Reason to Live” and it would be about the positive effects that an economic downturn brings about. Challenging, eh?
Would be great to see Madonna write a show about Broadway – maybe a compilation of her songs. @steveNYCguy
Tori Amos!!!! But also Mumford & Sons would be fun. Or how about P!nk? @actorphyllis
Florence Welch (Florence and the Machines) should write and perform in a Broadway musical. She has a powerful voice and a dramatic, theatrical nature and can tell stories through song. @mymusicboxes
@itsayskeds; Bruce Springsteen! It would be called Glory Days, of course (: Possibly a heartwarming coming-of-age story.
Hi Jonathan! I would love to see David Hodges writing for a Broadway musical; his songs always have that raw, intense emotion in them that would dominate the stage and enthrall the audience. I don’t know if he can act, but I can imagine him playing a dark, brooding musician or artist who struggles with his inner demons and overcomes them to produce a groundbreaking piece of work. @kohenda
I would love to see/hear Rufus Wainwright write a Broadway show about his family
Ru-Paul doing a play about Diana Ross !
